Background and Objective: The rapid development of digital technologies has increased youth engagement with the internet and social media, exposing them to various online risky activities. These activities include online gambling, sports betting, compulsive online shopping, and inappropriate social media consumption. This study examines Iranian youths (ages 18-35) risk perception of these activities, the impact of psychological and behavioral factors, and the effectiveness of Iranian’s legal framework in addressing these challenges.
Methodology: This research employs a descriptive-causal and cross-sectional analytical approach, surveying 1,500 Iranian youth. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using logistic regression models in SPSS.
Findings: A significant portion of young individuals perceive certain risky activities, such as online gambling and sports betting, as harmless. Factors such as loss of control over personal data, negative emotions (anxiety and powerlessness), and social pressure increase risk perception. The legal analysis revealed that Iranian’s existing regulations, including the 2009 Computer Crimes Law and the 2003 E-Commerce Law, lack specific mechanisms to regulate digital gambling, loot boxes, targeted advertising, and data protection.
Conclusion: Iranian legal framework requires substantial reforms to regulate high-risk digital activities, enhance advertising transparency, and protect users. In addition to legal improvements, increasing media literacy and establishing independent regulatory bodies can help mitigate the risks associated with online spaces.
